My Obsession with Alexa Site Info

Posted on by in Blog Tips

As a serial blogger, I started obsessing over Alexa site ranks ever since I began maintaining my first blog. And over the course of time I have began to understand some very interesting facts about Alexa ranking. The most stunning fact is that Alexa Site Ranks are grossly wrong. They are the most inaccurate tool to evaluate site rank.

Why is Alexa site rank a grossly inaccurate ranking tool?

Main reason for this is that Alexa only ranks a site when the visitor has an Alexa toolbar installed in its browser. The visitors who do not have the Alexa tool bar are not counted. As a general trend only webmasters and tech-geeks install the Alexa tool bar. This is why some sites related to niche like Entertainment are low on Alexa rank even though they have more visitors than a tech-related site.

As a case in point, my entertainment site – Myfray has over 200 visitors per day and it has an Alexa rank around 1,200,000 vis-a-vis CollegeFallOut manages around 100 visitors per day and it has an Alexa rank of 280,000. So is it not unfair that a site which gets almost twice the traffic than the other is ranked so below relatively.

But like most things in life – the prominence of Alexa rank remains unexplained as advertisers and bloggers like you and me obsess over the Alexa ranking of their sites.

That’s for sure. Your websites will have higher alexa rank if you write about seo, blogging, affiliaet marketing etc kind of topic even if you have very little traffic on your website. These days, I becomes very difficult to judge a website traffic level on seeing its Alexa ranking.

You are absolute right that alexa shows rankings wrong. But in average it gives an approximate ranking which will be nearer to the actual ranking. I am checking alexa since 3 years and i compared with other ranking services like compete and found it more accurate compared to others.

It is wrong to believe that Alexa has no effect over your blog’s reputation.
Alexa never defines itself as the ranking system is for the entire lot of visitors on the web.

It is a widely used method to rate your website through the eyes of Advertisers. There is no other useful method to do so.

Don’t get obsessed with it or either ignore it. You can all check out my post below to know the importance of it.

Alexa rank based on Alexa Toolbar that installed on browser. Suggest your visitors to install Alexa Toolbar to boost your rank. :D
